Deji Orekoya, 3rd Kyu

My martial arts journey began at the age of 11 in Lagos, Nigeria, where I trained in Shotokan Karate for about three years. When I moved back to the UK at 16, life was a bit unsettled, so I didn’t return to consistent training until I was 19. That’s when I discovered Taekwondo (WTF – World Taekwondo Federation), which I practiced for four years. It was during this time that I developed a passion for sparring competitions (Kyorugi).

A move to Gloucester caused another pause in my training, but once I returned to London, I reignited my martial arts path by joining a Kung Fu club in West London. I trained there for about four years and became deeply captivated by the discipline—at one point, I even considered becoming a Shaolin monk.

Life took another turn as I got married and became a father to three wonderful children. With family life in full swing, I stepped away from martial arts for over a decade. My return came unexpectedly when my eldest daughter, then 10, expressed an interest in Karate. I promised to train with her if she pursued it—and that brought me full circle, back to where it all started.

Together, we joined Higashi Karate Kai, where we train in Wado Ryu Karate. I’ve now been training there for four years, and I’m more committed than ever. I’m working towards earning my black belt and feel truly fortunate to be part of such a supportive and inspiring club.
